What is vegetable tanned leather?

Vegetable tanning is an ancestral method of transforming animal skins into leather. It consists of using plant tannins to make the skin rot-proof and water-resistant. Plant tannins are natural substances found in plants, bark, leaves or fruits. They are extracted from these materials by maceration or distillation.

How does vegetable tanning work?

Here are the stages of vegetable tanning process:

  • Preparing the skins: the skins are first cleaned and degreased.
  • Immersion in tannins: the skins are then immersed in vats containing vegetable tannins. The duration of the immersion varies depending on the skin type and the type of tannin used.
  • Drying: once tanning is complete, the hides are dried.
  • Finishing: the skins are then finished to give them their final appearance.

What are the advantages of vegetable tanning?

Vegetable tanning has many advantages, including:

  • A more natural leather: vegetable tanning does not use chemicals, which allows you to obtain a more natural and healthier leather.
  • More durable leather: vegetable-tanned leather is more durable and resistant.
  • A more aesthetic leather: vegetable tanned leather has a more natural color and a more elegant patina.
